Week One: Native American Literature.
Before we begin looking at the writings of European settlers I think it fitting to look at some texts from the rich tradition of Native American literature. We will begin by looking at the patterns of human immigration to North America in general and then look specifically at three texts from Native American writers. Two are traditional stories from the Native American oral tradition, and one is a letter written to an American president by the chief of a tribe that was losing its land to European settlers. It is my hope that by looking at these texts we can come to understand a little of the incredible worldview held by native peoples.

Week Two: "Conflicting Ideals: The Enlightenment and Puritanism"
This week we will begin looking at the conflicting ideas that were the basis for the worldview of the early European settlers in America, specifically the religious individualism of the Puritans and the scientific humanism of the Enlightenment. On their surface these two ideas are extremely different, but I think we will find that the underlying idea of individualism is central to both. The conflict between metaphysical and scientific truth is still alive and well today in America.

Week Twelve: Realism and Naturalism
Comparing the two concepts: Realism and Naturalism are often used to describe the same writers. However, there is continued debate among scholars about their relationship and some scholars even think they are opposing ideas. The concept of Realism (big “R”) is in many ways a reaction against Romanticism. In this sense, Realism is a “literary movement,” a recognizable change in artistic creation across multiple cultures. Realist writers sought to describe “reality” as carefully as possible without focusing on the character’s emotional reaction to the events. We will discuss some of the characteristics of this literary movement below. Naturalism, which is one of many Realistic “styles” of writing (my interpretation of their relationship), was particularly popular in America during the late 19th Century. In Naturalist writings, man is often caught in a struggle with nature, a struggle which nature usually wins. The underlying idea, or philosophy of Naturalism is sometimes called “pessimistic determinism”: the events of the world are pre-determined and humans are helplessly “tossed around” by fate until they inevitably die.

Field Trip: Busan Museum of Art
In our ongoing effort to find alternative uses for the critical thinking skills we are learning in class we head out for a morning at the BMofA. Looking for examples of character, setting, symbolism, and conflict in the works of art there is a great way to "interpret" them and look deeper into their meaning. It is also a lot of fun!
Week Fifteen: Final Exam Review
It is that happy time of year again when we attempt to remember all that we learned and our teachers try to trick us and drive us crazy with the most difficult questions their evil minds can imagine. Well....
