Welcome

I am very happy to welcome all of you to the Global Tutoring Program. We will have four two-hour class sessions and two out-of-class events. The class sessions will be based on current events topics, and the first topic, as you can see below, will be about gay marriage. It is my goal that we can explore issues and ideas that take us beyond what is typical for Korean culture, or at least expands on ideas currently being discussed in Korea and the rest of the world. Through this I hope we can gain a better understanding of ourselves, our community, and changing world we live in.

Week One
"Gay Rights and the Gay Marriage Debate"

Picture
In the United States and in many other countries today, many people are debating the role of government in defining what is and is not a family. Surveys have shown that even in conservative communities, the idea of what marriage should be is changing. In this discussion we read the opinions of two different writers and discuss this very controversial topic with a goal of gaining a better understanding of our society and the nature of individual rights in the modern world.

Week Two
"Finding Yourself: The Gap Year"

Picture
Several students asked about the importance and usefulness of taking a "gap year." We will discuss what they are, talk about the pro's and con's of taking a gap year, and talk about some ideas for how to get the most out of a break if you decide to take one. Other topics that might come up in this discussion are self-discovery, sexual responsibility, body art and tattoos, and travel.

Week Three
"Finding Someone to Love"

Picture
Another popular topic suggestion was dating and relationships. Finding a special person to share your life with is one of the biggest decisions any person will ever make. Knowing what you want is "half of the battle." We will discuss the challenges involved and try to think of some ways to make the process easier.

Week Four
"Finding Your Place in the World"

Picture
The world is changing very quickly and people are now more and more considering themselves part of a global community. We will discuss what that means and how the global economy, personal mobility, technology and communication, and the emerging "global culture" affect our lives today.

Event #1: Ocean Yacht Sailing on the "Manbal"

Our first event will be a sailing excursion aboard the beautiful sailing yacht "Manbal." The students from last semester's GTP program participated in the sailing event and they LOVED it. Our captain Jaeho Lee has over thirty years of sailing experience and is also a sailing instructor and advises the local racing community on sailing safety issues. Our event will be on Saturday afternoon from 2-6 or Saturday evening from 4-8. Afterwards we can eat a delicious dinner.

Event #2: Student's Choice

What would you like to do for our final event of the GTP session? Think of something fun we can do together as a group and make your suggestions. We will take a vote in class and decide together.

Discussion Topic Ideas: "It's up to you!"

I will be asking the students to give me three suggestions each for the remaining three topics of our discussion seminar. I will choose the best ones  and prepare lessons with reading, vocabulary, speaking, and listening components.
